Reflecting Sun Pavilion @ Chengdu Panda Base, February 2025

The final pavilion of the Panda Reception HallReflecting Sun Pavilion. Again, it’s a 2 indoor-5 outdoor set up, and again I had mixed success seeing the pandas. Last year across my 2 days at the base I saw 5 of the 6 listed pandas living in this pavilion, this time I saw 4 of the 6 listed, and had luck getting photos of Run Yue and Ai Jiu who I didn’t get good pictures of last time. I was also happy to see Cheng Lan again, although the photos look much the same as last time XD This was one of the busier pavilions in this area, but by no means was it super crowded, I was still able to get in and get photos from all the angles that I wanted.

Le Shan 乐山

Le Shan 乐山 is one of the pandas that I saw on my last visit – he was popular and happy sitting right at the front of the glass enjoying bamboo. This time he was quite active in his yard, but I think he was looking to get some more bamboo because his pile looked very picked through! The yard mostly has glass-free viewing, but unfortunately he was hanging around the top section where the best view of him was through glass. There were a lot of reflections so it was quite tricky to get good phots. But for a panda, the yard is very nice, with a range of plants to hide amongst.

Cheng Lan 成兰

I was sad to once again see Cheng Lan 成兰 sleeping – but at least it was outside sleeping this time?! I still really like him and one day I’ll have a great viewing experience with him. He is in one of the largest yards here with plenty of seating options, he picked a little spot under a tree and looked like he had quite a few leaves and muddy bits on him!

Run Yue 润玥 + Ai Jiu 艾玖

Now I did technically see both Run Yue 润玥 and Ai Jiu 艾玖, however one of them spent the whole time sleeping up on a platform further into the yard – it’s a nice yard, it’s quite long towards the back then spreads out at the front with a well-placed platform for feeding right in prime position, where the other panda spent the whole time eating bamboo. I’ve been trying to tell which panda it was that I saw, I think she looks a bit like Yuan Run, so I suspect she might be Run Yue.

Being born in 2020, these two were young peers with Hua Hua and He Ye and the four of them spent a lot of time together, so there are lots of pictures of them as young cubs, and these two together when the got a little older and separated from the twins. Being over 4 years old now, it’s likely that they will soon be separated as they mature into adults.
