Yuan Meng @ Chengdu Panda Base, September 2023

I never shared here, but did over on Instagram, but I was lucky enough to be able to go to China back in September 2023. The trip was for a conference in Beijing, but of course going all that way I added in several days of holiday to the trip and made my way to Chengdu for two days seeing pandas! I had two priorities for these visits to the Chengdu Panda Base and one of those was to see Yuan Meng. Yuan Meng was born at ZooParc de Beauval in 2017, I visited and saw him there in March 2022, and then in July 2023 he moved back to China to the Chengdu Panda Base. There wasn’t a huge amount of info online about him once he was there, but I was able to see that he was in Panda House 1 and was on show – that was enough for me and I endeavoured to head straight there on my visit. I got distracted by the nursery on the way there, but was able to get to Panda House 1 early enough that he was still outside. At the time of my visit there was no signage to identify what panda was in the enclosure, but there was a small group of photographers hanging around at one viewing spot in particular and I heard one of them say ‘Yuan Meng’ so I waited with them. At the base once the temperature gets to 26 degrees celcius (or above), the pandas are brought inside, it was getting pretty close to that when I got there, so I really was lucky to be able to see him at all (there was no indoor viewing for him). He was quite shy and very much stayed at the back of the outdoor space, so it could be a little tricky to get photos through the trees and bushes, but I quite like this as it gave him good options to be outside but without always being under the eyes of the public. Since my visit I’ve seen quite a few photos of him appearing on Chinese social media, so it looks like he’s gotten more confident and has been showing off for his fans!

Pairi Daiza, Belgium 2022

I’ve already posted about seeing the pandas and sleeping in the resort at Pairi Daiza in 2022, but time for the rest of the park pictures! We spent 1 night and 2 full days here and I think we really made the most of it (despite primarily being there for the pandas), although another day would have been perfect to revisit some of our favourite animals. At the time of our visit, the new entrance was still being constructed – this is now open and there have been some changes in the past 1.5 years so some things may look a little different and there may be different animals in some areas now. I have also posted previously about my first visit to Pairi Daiza back in 2017 – seriously, where did the time go?!

Sleep with the Polar Bears at Pairi Daiza

Pairi Daiza in Belgium has had hotels open in the heart of the zoo for several years now – it started with The Paddling Bear hotel, and has now extended to rooms in both the Last Frontier and Land of the Cold areas. You can lie in bed or lounge on the sofa overlooking tigers, walruses, penguins, bears and more! We opted to choose a polar bear room – here there are 3 levels of options, an ‘eye-to-eye’ view which has water around 2/3rds of the way up the window so you get great views when the bears are swimming, a ‘from above’ view which is just about in the eyeline of the polar bears on the ground, and a ‘birds eye’ view another floor up giving you a great sweeping view across the whole habitat. I was very happy with our ‘from above’ view over the lovely polar bears!

Last time seeing Yang Guang and Tian Tian at Edinburgh Zoo (December 2023)

One last time posting about Yang Guang and Tian Tian living in Edinburgh Zoo – on the 30th of November 2023, the pandas had their last guaranteed on show day to the public (photos included in the November posts^). The zoo had announced that after this date that the pandas would be only visible if they were in the outdoor enclosure, so I made a trip on the 3rd of December 2023 with a friend on the off chance that we might see the pandas outside – lucky we did as not only did we see the pandas outside but on the 4th of December they left Edinburgh to head back to China. I got quite a few pictures, but ending with just the ‘best’ one – sure it’s not amazing quality and it’s through multiple fences, but I ended on a high getting a photo of both Yang Guang and Tian Tian ‘together’ outside which I’ve never seen before so I count myself incredibly lucky to have been there at the right moment. Yang Guang is the closer panda with his back to me and Tian Tian is standing on the rocks looking towards her panda pal of the last 12 years. I’m very hopeful that I’ll be back in China this year and will be able to see both my favourite pandas again 🤍🖤
