Mang Zai + Mang Can Can at CHONGQING ZOO

Next up in the first area of pandas at Chongqing Zoo, was mama Mang Zai 莽仔 and her 2023-born cub Mang Can Can 莽灿灿! This pair was one of my most anticipated panda viewings because they have been incredibly widely shared about online and baby Mang Can Can just looks so adorable. I was particularly keen to see him sitting in his little wooden car, however since then there has been a bit of a switch around with the yards, so they’re no longer in with the car, but in with the giant wooden camel – seeing him sitting on the camel sounded like a decent enough alternative!

In the morning it was still cleaning time in their yard when I got there, so I waited around with the other several hundred fans waiting to catch a glimpse. Eventually the door opened and after a few minutes Mang Can Can came strolling out and headed straight for a tree for some climbing. He was pretty swiftly followed by mum Mang Zai. He’s an active cub and did so much climbing over all of his climbing frame options – love the bridge, but you really can’t beat a giant wooden camel to climb on! The yard has lots of wooden options, but there were also some tires and plastic toys as well – I quite like the mix and it’s good enrichment for a young panda. Of course, there was also a table with two chairs, and shortly after the climbing session, the pairs headed over to the table to enjoy their apple slices, honestly I will never get over seeing pandas sitting so sweetly at a table on chairs to eat. It’s the best thing ever! Later in the afternoon Mang Zai was thoroughly enjoying her pile of bamboo while Mang Can Can enjoyed more playing, he was climbing all over everything – so active and adventurous. He did try to bother Mang Zai a bit, but as an experienced mother, she wasn’t letting him get in the way of her bamboo.

They were a very popular pair and there was always a large crowd gathered around their yard – it’s pretty well placed on a corner, so you can view from two sides, more space for people. It was at this yard that I realised my Chinese was pretty good – a grandmother told her grandson (around 9 or 10 years old) to ‘push the foreigner out of the way’ so they could get closer to the front. I still need to learn some comebacks, but I think she knew I understood from the look of dismay on my face! It’s completely elbows out and every one for themselves at panda viewing, especially at this yard here!

Mang Can Can is Mang Zai‘s third pregnancy. She was born in 2011, making her 13.5 years old on my visit. She is a descendant of Xin Xing of course having been born here at Chongqing Zoo. She first became a mother in 2019, having twins Xi Xi and Qing Qing (who I saw later, photos to come!), then again in 2021 with twins Xing Xing and Chen Chen who are her yard neighbours who I just posted about, and now this was her third pregnancy – a success in the breeding programme for sure.

Xing Xing + Chen Chen at CHONGQING ZOO

The second pandas I saw at Chongqing Zoo were Xing Xing 星星 and Chen Chen 辰辰- they are male twins and were born in 2021, making them 3.5 years old on my visit – as I post this they have just celebrated their 4th birthday and received a beautiful ‘cake’ of bamboo and fruits, the photos of them enjoying it were so lovely! These two are the offspring of the second (twin) pregnancy of Mang Zai (who I saw next), and their older siblings are Xi Xi and Qing Qing, part of the famous quartet of pandas here at Chongqing Zoo^

These two were playful and active almost the entire day. When I got there first thing in the morning they were playing together all over the yard – it’s a very nice one with lots of different climbing elements to it and they were sure making use of all of them. I especially liked the log ladder, it sure takes some skill for a panda to climb up there, particularly when your brother is trying to pull you down and get on himself! Just so many great interactions to see and they were very popular with the crowds because of it. The best moments however were when they were served their bamboo shoots at their table and they sat in their chairs to eat – ok, there was a back-paw on the table too, but it was absolutely adorable to see them sitting all nice and enjoying their snack – a top panda viewing moment for me. And the debris left behind when they were done was hilarious, bits of discarded bamboo everywhere!

Introduction to PANDAS @ CHONGQING ZOO and Hao Qi + cub

My first new panda location within China for this trip – I made it to Chongqing Zoo! I already discussed getting there, the fantastic panda-themed metro stop and what else I saw in Chongqing, but it’s time to share about the pandas. Chongqing Zoo has one of the largest collections of pandas outside of the main bases in Sichuan province, and because of that it’s incredibly popular – it likely didn’t help that I visited on a Saturday, but it was incredibly busy, possibly busier than I’ve seen Chengdu Base at on some visits. At the time I found this a bit off-putting and didn’t think I would return, but with more hindsight, I do think I’d still go back – just with a selfie/camera stick this time, I think this is the place where I’ve seen the most selfie sticks at one time!

Ya’an Bifengxia Panda Base pt.7 – Overseas Panda Paradise ~ Mei Sheng, Bing Bao + Bing Zai, Bai Feng, Da Bai Tu + cubs

Onto the final section of the Ya’an Bifengxia Base, the Overseas Panda Paradise! This is the furthest area into the base – I’m quite proud of myself for walking the whole base and not taking the bus, I racked up the equivalent of 99 flights of stairs according to my phone on this day! Here there are 5 visible yards, and another couple that aren’t visible (but I did spy a panda in far up the hill and through the trees!) – in these 5 yards were a total 8 pandas, and I managed to see them all. Sadly however the only view I had of Dutch-born Fan Xing was of her bum way at the back of the yard … one day I’ll have a great time seeing her, it wasn’t this day!

Ya’an Bifengxia Panda Base pt.6 – Leopard Mountain ~ Yi Bin + Yi Ren, Jin Shan + cub, Ying Hua + cubs, Xian Nu

The next area to share is the Leopard Mountain – this area has 5 yards, however I would say that generally 4 of them are trickier to see. 3 are set on a pretty steep mountain-side, and while there are a couple of viewing platforms, you are quite far from the pandas and still don’t get a great viewing angle. The other 2 have flatter viewing options but the yards are still hilly, so you can’t see a lot of them, and they are only viewed through glass windows – Xiang Xiang lives in one of these yards and I saw her last time, as is pretty standard there were a lot of Japanese fans there on this visit and I didn’t see her at all. But I did see pandas in all the other yards, albeit some from very far away:
