ZooParc de Beauval, France 2022

I already posted about visiting the pandas at ZooParc de Beauval back in March 2022 (where did the time go, I can’t believe it’s been 2 years since this trip!), I’m now finally getting around to posting about the rest of the zoo. It is a huge site with so many different animals to see – and I took so many photos it was hard to narrow them all down. Because of the size, this is definitely not a 1-day type of place – with the distance it was for me to get there, we stayed on-property in one of the Zoo’s hotels for 3 nights, so we ended up with 2 full days and 2-3 hours in the afternoon that we arrived. This was a good amount of time to see everything on a first visit, but could easily go back for that same length of time again. Going in March was pretty good because the Zoo was never particularly busy, or because of the large size, people were generally very spread out so you could always get a good view of all the animals. The Zoo is conveniently split into 3 areas, it’s very possible to walk all the way across the zoo, however they have installed a very convenient telecabine which you can take between the north entrance by the lions in the Zone Nord all the way over to the opposite site of the zoo in Zone Sud by the elephants – this had shorter operation times than the opening of the zoo, so getting there at opening time means a walk all the way over to Zone Sud to get to the pandas, and if you miss the last one back, a walk all the way back at the end of the day. Some of the cabins even had a glass floor so you could really see everything all around, I’m not sure I liked this so much seeing the ground go past beneath me! This was a great way to get a good view of the whole zoo plus you were directly over some of the animals. The Zoo also has plenty of play areas for kids, and plenty of restaurants and food/drink kiosks – which ones are open just depend on the time of year, so on our visit most of the small kiosks were closed.

Tian Tian November 2023 (Edinburgh Zoo)

And of course, I saw plenty of Tian Tian in November as well – she spent more time inside than outside, but she did take a few wanders outside the door (and then came back in within a minute every time haha). She really looked super relaxed and happy for her final month in Scotland. I think she knew what was going on and was definitely showing off for the crowds. I was very pleased to see her come out to see the public on the final day of indoor viewing – the media definitely got some lovely clips of her inside. Overall, I was so happy to have some great last visits with her and I got some great pictures!

Yang Guang November 2023 (Edinburgh Zoo)

November 2023 – the last month that the giant pandas in Edinburgh could be guaranteed to be seen at the zoo*! Of course I visited a couple of times to make sure I was soaking in all the time with my favourite pandas that I could – and here are some of my pictures of Yang Guang. Even though it was chilly, and did try to snow this month, on my visits I would say he spent an equal amount of time inside and outside. With condensation on the inside of the glass it was tricky to get many indoor pictures of him, but I got many good photos of him outside, so definitely no complaints from me there! It was great to see so many people coming to say good bye and spend some last moments in Edinburgh with Yang Guang.

*The pandas were announced to be leaving in December 2023, but the indoor viewing area would be closed to the public to allow staff to make the necessary preparations. The pandas were given free access outside, but it couldn’t be guaranteed that they would go outside, so visitors may/may not have been able to see them until their departure. The pandas left Edinburgh Zoo on the 4th of December 2023, 12 years to the day after arriving.

Yang Guang October 2023 (Edinburgh Zoo)

While I did get to the zoo in September, I only managed 1 visit as I was away for over 2 weeks, and sadly I didn’t get a huge number of great pictures – so onto October! Tian Tian spent my whole visit in her basket at the back wall of her indoor enclosure, so I didn’t get many clear pictures of her; luckily Yang Guang was front and centre and spent a lot of time outside enjoying his bamboo! He picked a great spot to lean against facing the crowd – it was pretty good weather and there was still some sun to be had =)

ARTIS Zoo, Amsterdam – snapshots in Summer

On my way home from Madrid in June 2023 I had several hours in Amsterdam, of course I hopped on a train into the city and spent the afternoon at ARTIS! It was a Friday afternoon (at the start of June, so not Summer holiday time yet), and while there were a couple of school groups, it was actually relatively quiet despite the great weather. It had been a few years since my last trip, most things were as I remembered but there seemed to be some new additions, or perhaps just things I hadn’t remembered seeing previously – there was a new lion habitat being built and it looked amazing, so I think I’ll need to visit again to see that with the lions now living there! Most of the animals were up and about and active, I definitely liked seeing the elephants and giraffes outside and interacting in their herds which I hadn’t seen so much when visiting in Winter. I would definitely recommend a weekday visit in the warmer months!
