Wen Li, Xiang Lin, Bao Mei, Zhen Xi and Gong Zai @ Chengdu Panda Base, February 2025

In addition to the kindergarten space, and seeing some mums living with their cubs, I also saw a number of adult pandas alone in the Moonlight Nursery area – two of these were also mums to some of the kindergarten cubs, it’s possible that they are all rotated so this just happens to be what I saw on my visits. These were Olympia (although I didn’t see much of her at all) and Wen Li. There are also some females living here who aren’t mothers to the cubs, and some adult males too – so it’s a pretty good mixed area to see a range of pandas in.

There are also indoor viewing spaces here, one section for very young cubs with incubators and crib-style beds, and another for toddler-aged cubs and up – here I’ve seen a number of pandas before, but on this occasion there were no pandas in the inside viewing, likely because it was Winter and the pandas are being shown outside only.

Wen Li 文莉

I saw Wen Li 文莉 on the second day of my visit – she’s 15 years old and I don’t think I’ve seen her before. She gave birth to a single cub in 2024, so one of the cubs in the kindergarten is hers. She seemed pretty chilled out and spent all the time I saw her up on one of the platforms peering into her neighbours’ yards! I don’t see much about her online at all, so there’s not a lot to know – I’m sure that the mums all take turns spending time with their cubs here and on the day I saw her it was a solo day^

Xiang Lin 香林

Xiang Lin 香林 was one of the pandas I saw on the first day of my visit, he’s a 15 year old male – it was interesting that there were quite a few males living here in the nursery building. He looks very handsome and he was incredibly interested in his female neighbours, he was doing a lot of climbing and trying to get high to spot them! I had a look online and it said almost the same thing, he loves climbing high to look into his neighbours yards, that’s so cute^ One interesting fact about him, he is a ‘swap’ from CCRCGPXiang Lin was born in Ya’an and moved around between a few of the bases over several years before he then moved to the Chengdu Base on breeding exchange (suggested to be in 2024).

Bao Mei 宝妹

On the second day of my visit I also very briefly saw Bao Mei 宝妹, who I saw last year on my visit – she was incredibly active and hard to get pictures of because she was constantly in and around the plants of her yard. She’s still young, being 5.5 years old, but being put into one of the nursery houses may mean she is planned for breeding this year, or at least experience a first breeding season.

Zhen Xi 珍喜

Zhen Xi 珍喜 was one of the pandas I saw on both days of my visit living in the same yard, and I don’t think I’ve seen her before as an adult. She was born in 2017, meaning I may have seen her on my November 2017 visit. There are some posts online with pictures of her through her younger years, she is so recognisable in them for her very round white fluffy face! Through mother Qi Zhen, she is also sisters with Zooparc de Beauval‘s Huan Huan. At 7.5 years old she hasn’t been reported to have given birth yet, alike Bao Mei, her inclusion here in this area may mean she partook in the 2025 breeding season.

Gong Zai 功仔

The final panda living here to share about is a firm favourite – it’s Gong Zai 功仔! I saw him on my 2023 visit and loved watching him, he’s so handsome! I saw him on both days of my visit and he spent the whole time sitting in almost the same spot eating a huge pile of bamboo – which is pretty much how I saw him in 2023 as well XD Still a handsome boy and he was incredibly popular, lots of people stopping at his yard to see him after seeing the cubs in the kindergarten yard. Can’t wait to see him again next time^
